Amar Bose was a famous engineer and entrepreneur credited for the creation of the Bose Corporation, a company that produces high quality sound systems. The Bose Corporation is known for producing home audio systems and speakers, headphones, and car sound systems. The company is known for being very protective of its patents, trademarks, and brands.

Early Life

Amar Brose was born in 1929, in Philadelphia to a Bengali father and an American mother. At just thirteen years old, during World War II, Amar and some friends created a home business, repairing model trains and home radios. Amar used the income from this small business to help his family. Amar attended and graduated from Abington Senior High School. He then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He graduated with a Bachelor of Science, and later completed his PhD in electrical engineering for his thesis on non-linear systems.

Amar Brose was a big lover of classical music. Following his graduation from MIT, he purchased a high end stereo system with supposedly very high quality sound. He was disappointed, however, with the sound quality. He began research into speaker technology, concentrating on the different weaknesses of all the different high end speaker systems. In addition to his research, he became a professor at MIT. In the early 1960s, Amar Bose invented a new type of stereo loudspeaker, which consisted of multiple smaller speakers. Dr. Y. W. Lee, his mentor at MIT, motivated Amar to do long term research in acoustics. In 1964, Amar Bose founded the Bose Corporation. Amar continued his research, and later invented the Bose wave radio and Bose noise-cancelling headphones. Bose equipment was very successful, and used all over the world. It was even adopted by pilots in both military and commercial flights. Bose later designed a new software program that allowed acoustic engineers to simulate a sound from any seat in a large room. Many big, popular spaces used this system designed by Bose. The quality of sound produced by the Bose equipment became so successful that famous car companies began to install Bose audio systems in their vehicles. Bose remained a professor at MIT for 45 years. He used unique teaching methods to give his students extra motivation. In 2011, Bose donated a majority of his company’s shares to MIT. However, MIT can not sell the shares, and they do not help manage the company. Amar Bose was included in the 2006 Forbes Billionaires list with a net worth of 1.2 billion dollars.

Personal Life

In his early career as a research scholar, Amar Bose traveled to New Delhi. While there, he met Prema, who he would later marry. The couple had two children together, Vanu and Maya, but later divorced. Vanu Bose went on to become the founder and CEO of Vanu, Inc. Amar Bose died in 2013, in Wayland, Massachusetts at 83 years old.

My Interest

I have listened to Bose headphones and Bose stereo systems for years, but have never paid much attention to who actually started the company. Before this assignment, I did not have any idea who Amar Bose was. I chose Amar Bose as my engineer because I love music, and the Bose headphones I have listened to have produced very high quality sound. It is interesting to learn about the man that is responsible for creating that high quality sound.
